The Gig Delusion eBook Andy Kind
As an American, I don't have a lot of access to British stand-up comedians. But a few years ago, a friend in the UK sent me a copy of Andy Kind's first book, Stand Up and Deliver, and not only did I find Andy Kind charming and very funny, I also grew in my Anglophilia. I LOVE comedy, especially clean comedy, which Andy specializes in and I contacted him and asked him if I could interview him for my writing blog. He agreed. We became mates. Kind of. Well as close as you can get over a couple of emails, the Atlantic Ocean and the fact that I'm a mum of five in the US.Recently I reconnected with Andy on Twitter and found out that he had released ANOTHER book! YES! I jumped at the chance to read it. My Anglophilia is now at an all-time high (thank you BBC television!) so I was eager to read it and wrap my head around all the English football references. (I don't get them, and I LOVE it!)
This book killed me. With the first page or so, I was snort-laughing. By the second chapter, I had lost my composure completely. I was reading the digitial version on my smartphone while I sat at the pool "watching" my children play and really, I laughed so hard, I nearly fell in the water and the thought of ruining my phone was completely worth the risk.
Unlike Stand Up and Deliver, which is more memoiry, The Gig Delusion offers this interesting premise: Andy's shady agent requires him to perform in each of Britain's 39 counties in ten weeks or he won't sign him. In that same ten weeks, Andy's true love, Betty, is planning their dream wedding. Will Andy be able to make all the gigs AND keep Betty's affection? I am a novelist and as I got into this book, I kept thinking, boy, this is a great set-up. Wow. Look at the way he's got these mutually-exclusive objectives! Hey, this plot is moving along nicely! Flashbacks to his grandparents! Vivid characterization! So strictly speaking as a novel, this book is tight. Well done. That alone would give it 4 stars in my book.
But there's so much more. Oh my word. I have never seen Andy on stage (forgive me, Andy, in my head, you sound like Benedict Cumberbatch) so I don't have a mental reference to how his timing and his jokes work. But I DO know that taking material from the stage to the written page is risky and a lot can be lost. Andy NAILS it! His humor, his jokes, his stories, his description, his #possibleabuseofhashtags are so funny, very well crafted and perfect for the plot and the progression of the book. I have read a LOT and I am always on the look-out for original stories that are well written AND hilarious. And I find very few. THIS BOOK IS A TREASURE!
I highlighted some of my favorite bits: "I was best known in comedy for being a Christian, but that's not so much a 'role' as a reason for people to avoid car-sharing" and "That was the reason I wanted an agent in the first place. For my family. For Betty. (And to help towards a down payment on that house-robot, whom I would name Dean." and "As the other women gleefully debated what shade and texture of ribbon would be most salubrious, my sister, Jenny joined me in the living room for a nap time. We stretched out on separate sofas and skyplussed 'Deal or No Deal' -- that show is, essentially, a long-winded Advent calendar." And the part about doing stand-up over a grocery store PA system. And the gas, sorry, PETROL station attendant who was obsessed with British history, and pins and needles! (The list never ends .. . .) And as the plot progressed, I was SO WORRIED about him. Would he really hit all 39 counties? Would Betty fully understand? Would he get the big manly grill for a wedding present?
IT ENDS SO NICELY! Andy fully expressed why it is I personally love comedy and why I'm honored and thrilled to applaud this very enjoyable book: "Laughter is so beautiful in the way it dispels tension. That's why we need it. When you laugh, all the crap, all the stress, all the hurt that has burrowed its way into you gets ejected. It simply isn't allowed to stay. Laughter acts like a sort of leaf-blower for the soul."
Thank you Andy Kind. Please write another book.

The Gig Delusion eBook Andy Kind Reviews
I was almost scared to read this 2nd book by Andy Kind, having loved his 1st , Stand Up and Deliver, SO very much. I neednt have worried. The Gig delusion is a riveting mixture of laugh out loud witty banter , well written storyline and a beautiful romance.
Kind's pace , whether in describing the hilariously unrealistic challenge our hero faces, the beauty of his honestly soul searching romance or the timing of his jokes is perfect!
He captures the "life" of the comedy circuit and comedian so well and vividly. His parallel storyline of the pivotal relationship with his beloved grandfather is both touching and hilarious. There is a depth to his story-telling and the plot which ensures it will appeal across the board. It has heart. It has soul. It has belly laughs. The Gig Delusion also has a damn fine story. Not just for those who like funny books, although it is that, this has a tale of adventure and love - but be warned, make sure you read it somewhere you can LAUGH OUT LOUD!
Awesome.
I recognised Andy Kind's face so picked this book up quite happily. I was half expecting a "joke after joke after joke", but this book gave me much more.
It really examines Andy's relationshiops with those around him... his fiancee to be.... his agent to be... and his fellow comedians.
I was hooked from about page 4 and thoroughly enjoyed it.
Recommended for memoir lovers.
